With the increasing importance and emphasis being laid on conserving the environment many families are looking at organic gardening as an option. This method of gardening helps to supply families with farm fresh produce daily. As an added advantage a lesser amount of chemicals are being released into the environment. These are just a few benefits that organic gardening offers.
If you are a beginner and are looking to start your own organic garden there are several factors that you need to keep in mind. You will need to start with buying the basic tools and supplies for your garden.
One of the most important tools that you will need to start your own organic garden is compost. You can choose to buy compost or prepare it in your garden. This is very important as it helps to condition the soil and it reduces the pH balance of the soil. This will enhance the quality of the soil.
Buy seedlings and bulbs in bulk. This will help you to cut your set up costs. You will need to protect your saplings from insects and birds. Invest in quality bird nets and covers to keep predators at bay. You will also need to buy netting and sticky tape to set up the covers.
In order to keep insects away you will need to spray the plants with vinegar. Thus you will need to buy vinegar in bulk. After you spray the plants with vinegar ensure that you water the plants to get rid of all traces of the vinegar.
Once you have the tools to start your organic garden you need to plan the layout of the garden. Start with choosing an area where you would like to set up your garden. An ideal spot would be one where the sun shines for a part of the day and the rest of the day the area is covered with shade. This will give you the freedom to grow several different types of plants.
Check the soil to ensure that it drains well and does not retain water. Also ensure that the area gets easy access to water.
Clear the area of all weeds; this will help to prevent issues with weeds at a later stage. Use a rake to dig out weeds that may be growing below the surface. After you have dug out the weeds apply a rich layer of fertilizers to the soil and keep it for a few weeks.
You can reduce your costs by preparing composts at home. Dig a compost pit in your backyard and collect dead leaves, grass, eggshells and waste in it.
If you are very enthusiastic about your garden you must water it at the same time daily. Some saplings need to be watered at regular intervals. Research the saplings before you grow them in order to get maximum output.
Check your garden daily. Look out for weeds and insects and get rid of them immediately. Trim your plants regularly in order to help them grow better.
